DUCTED PELLET STOVE: WHAT WORK IS NECESSARY

HOW TO HEAT THE MOST ROOMS IN YOUR HOUSE, SAVING MONEY

Installing a pellet stove is an eco-friendly and economical way to heat a home environment. The savings are even greater if you choose a ducted pellet stove, which allows you to heat more than one room. The hot air generated by pellet combustion can be conveyed up to 8 meters away without heat loss, allowing you to heat multiple rooms with a single unit.

To install such a stove, some construction work is required. Let's start with understanding how the stove operates to determine which interventions will be necessary.

HOW A DUCTED PELLET STOVE WORKS

The pellet stoves available on the market can be air-based, with a single front fan, or ducted, equipped with one or more air outlets that can be conveyed to other rooms, even on different floors of the house, through wall ducts.

The ducted pellet stove is ideal if you need to heat two or more rooms using a single generator.

Upon reaching a certain temperature, the fans in the pellet stove activate and forcibly convey the hot air along the pipes and, from there, out of the nozzles installed on the wall.

The patented Comfort Air® system by MCZ represents a further advancement in ducting technology. Instead of being forcibly pushed outside, the hot air is aspirated and diffused. This ensures a more efficient and uniform spread of heat.

The ducted Ego stove (pictured above) is one of the many models from the MCZ catalog that allows you to heat your home more efficiently.

With a ducted pellet stove, you provide your home with an alternative heating system that harnesses the calorific power and convenience of pellets to distribute hot air to multiple rooms.

The best ducted stoves allow you to independently adjust the ventilation to achieve personalized temperatures in the various rooms. This way, you can ensure different levels of comfort in different areas, all powered by a single heat source.

WHAT WORK IS NECESSARY TO INSTALL THE DUCTS?

Note: A professional must always design the building intervention, but there are some standard parameters that generally apply.

  • The hot air ducts have a variable diameter depending on the system chosen. Comfort Air® ducts by MCZ have a diameter of around 60 mm, making them easy to install in partition or non-load-bearing walls.
  • Multiple floors of the house can be heated.
  • In addition to the room where the stove is installed, you can heat two or more zones, depending on the number of fans and room layout.
  • Ducts are typically made of flexible aluminum. Comfort Air® ducts from MCZ can easily reach up to 8 meters and provide a steady hot air output at 80°C.
  • If your stove has multiple duct outlets, you can use one for a larger space and split the other. Just make sure both branches are the same length to ensure even airflow.
  • In addition to the ducts, the technician will install diffusers, or vents, from which the hot air will emerge. These can be single-directional, bi-directional, or multi-directional, and can be manually adjusted or remote controlled.

MCZ offers designer diffusers with minimal styling, which can be freely installed anywhere in the room, including near the floor. Some models, unique on the market, also function as wall lamps and feature a tray of water that vaporizes as the hot air exits. This adds pleasant warmth, the right level of humidity, and—by adding essential oils or fragrances—a light aromatherapy effect.

DO YOU HAVE A CHIMNEY?

Once the ducting is complete, there's another element to consider: if a chimney is not already present, you will need to plan for one.

Since September 2013, all new heating systems or those replacing existing ones are legally required to vent through the roof. This is mandated by national legislation (Law 90/2013), which enforces significant penalties for non-compliance.

Wall venting without a chimney is not only illegal but also discouraged, as it can compromise the operation of the stove and void the warranty.

Before installing your ducted pellet stove, check if your home already has a chimney. If so, make sure it is functional and safe to use by contacting a qualified technician for the necessary inspections. If not, you will need to construct one.

Considering the scope of the work, we recommend planning your ducted pellet stove installation during a home renovation or while building a new home.

If you'd prefer to avoid major construction but still want to switch to pellet heating, consider a hydro pellet stove connected to your existing plumbing system. In addition to heating the air, this setup also heats the water in your underfloor heating or radiators, ensuring maximum comfort and warmth.

HOW MUCH DO THE WORKS COST?

If you install a ducted pellet stove during your home renovation, you may be eligible for tax deductions and recover 50% of the cost through IRPEF. Alternatively, if your stove is replacing an old, polluting system, you could benefit from the Thermal Account and receive up to €2,300 directly to your bank account within approximately two months of activating the contract.
